UFO Reports Surge as German Investigators Examine Thousands of Strange Sightings

Glowing spheres, mysterious lights and unexplained objects continue to fill the files of one of Europe’s busiest UFO reporting centers.

Something unusual is happening in the skies over Germany—or perhaps more people than ever are simply looking up.

Germany’s Central Research Network for Extraordinary Celestial Phenomena, better known as CENAP, says it is currently receiving between three and six UFO reports every day. By August 2026, the organization says it had investigated roughly 14,000 reported sightings during its years of operation. (euronews)

And the numbers have been climbing.

CENAP recorded 1,348 reports during 2025, a record for the organization. Those reports came primarily from Germany, Austria and Switzerland, with occasional cases arriving from elsewhere. CENAP director Hansjürgen Köhler said reports have increased steadily since 2019. (DIE WELT)

Strange Lights Fill the Night Sky

Witnesses have reported glowing spheres, unusual lights and objects they could not immediately identify.

But unidentified does not necessarily mean extraterrestrial.

CENAP approaches UFO reports from a decidedly skeptical position. Investigators compare sightings against astronomical events, known aircraft activity and other possible explanations.

Many cases eventually turn out to involve ordinary objects appearing under unusual circumstances.

Among the explanations CENAP has identified are airplanes, helicopters, meteors, bright planets and stars, weather balloons, drones, rocket stages, satellites and reentering space debris. Starlink satellite formations alone accounted for more than 120 reports during 2025. (DIE WELT)

Lasers from public events and large reflective balloons have also fooled observers.

Yet not every case gets closed.

Some Cases Remain Unexplained

Köhler acknowledges that CENAP has cases it has been unable to resolve.

That does not mean investigators consider them evidence of alien spacecraft. In many instances, the problem is simply a lack of information.

A serious investigation requires an accurate date, time, location, direction of observation and, whenever possible, photographs or video. Without those details, investigators may be unable to determine what a witness actually saw. (euronews)

Still, those unresolved files are important.

A UFO, after all, is exactly what the name suggests: an unidentified object or phenomenon. The mystery begins when conventional explanations fail—not before.

UFOs Return to the Spotlight

The renewed interest in Europe comes while the United States continues publicly examining what government officials now generally call Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena, or UAP.

The Pentagon formally authenticated three widely circulated Navy UFO videos in 2020, and the Department of Defense later established the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, or AARO, to investigate reports and examine their possible implications for national security. (euronews)

That attention has helped move the subject away from the fringes and back into public discussion.

CENAP, however, has been examining unusual reports for decades.

Its investigators remain convinced that most sightings will eventually have conventional explanations. At the same time, Köhler says he does not reject the possibility that life exists elsewhere in the universe. (euronews)

And perhaps that is where the real story lies.

Thousands of people continue looking upward and seeing something they cannot explain. Most sightings may eventually become aircraft, satellites, planets or balloons.

A few may remain stubbornly unidentified.

Whether that tells us more about increasingly crowded skies, human perception—or something we have yet to understand—is still an open question.

You be the judge.
