A holiday on Gozo takes a frightening turn when something reportedly refuses to let the visitors leave

There is something peculiar about the first night in an unfamiliar house.

You haven’t learned its sounds. A click might be the refrigerator. A creak might be furniture settling. Beyond the bedroom door, every little noise belongs to a place you do not yet know.

Usually, morning makes it all ordinary again.

But a group staying in Xewkija, on Malta’s island of Gozo, reported a night that ended before they were willing to wait for daylight.

A VOICE IN THE RENTAL

The group had come for a holiday. During the night of September 22–23, 2026, one woman reportedly heard someone calling for their mother. At first, she thought it was the child staying with them.

Then the guests described a voice and a human like shadow beneath a bedroom door. Their dog reportedly became distressed.

It is the sort of beginning a campfire storyteller scarcely needs to embellish. Someone hears a child—or thinks they do. A door separates the listener from the sound.

And suddenly, opening that door becomes a decision.

TIME TO LEAVE

The group also claimed that an oven door opened and closed, a fan moved as its cable was pulled, and microwave controls activated without anyone touching them.

They decided to go.

As they attempted to leave, one man alleged that a figure grabbed him from behind and repeatedly threw him against a bed. He described a white face without eyes, then claimed the figure passed through a closed glass door. No injuries were reported. These details come from Lovin Malta’s account of the incident.

SOMEONE ANSWERED THE CALL

At around 2 a.m., police were reportedly called for assistance. Officers found four adults and a minor outside the residence. The group appeared distressed, and a police report was filed, according to Malta Daily’s coverage.

There is a difference between enjoying a ghost story and standing outside a holiday home, asking someone to come and help.

That does not establish what happened inside. It does give the account a human center: people who said they were frightened enough to leave.

THE PRIEST KEPT HIS COUNSEL

A priest later said police had collected him to visit the property. Asked about the encounter, he declined to discuss the details, citing the distress of a family involved. Lovin Malta reported his statement.

We cannot supply the scene he chose to keep private. There is no need to.

A storyteller might wish for one final revelation—a name in an old register, a forgotten photograph, an explanation for the voice. The available reports provide none, and the alleged haunting remains unverified.

Instead, the story leaves us with a voice calling for its mother and a question that follows it:

If the witnesses’ account is accurate, who did they hear?
