Investigators say they felt an oppressive atmosphere across Massapequa—but does the community’s troubled history explain the sensation?
MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — A quiet Long Island community known for tidy homes, busy shopping streets and wooded walking trails has become the center of an unusual paranormal investigation.
Members of Long Island Paranormal Investigators recently toured several locations around Massapequa and Massapequa Park after a series of violent crimes renewed attention on the area’s darker history. During the visit, investigators reported feeling sudden emotional distress, pressure in the chest and what one team member described as a “very heavy sadness.” (New York Post)
An Unexpected Reaction
Investigator Emily Granados reportedly entered several locations without first studying their history. The team uses that method to reduce the chance that prior knowledge might influence what members experience.
Granados said the atmosphere changed near certain homes and along sections of Massapequa Preserve. She described feelings of despair, aggression and physical discomfort that appeared without warning.
Founder Mike Cardinuto said the group has investigated dozens of locations across Long Island since its formation in 2003. The team uses digital recorders, electromagnetic-field meters, cameras and radio-scanning devices while also attempting to identify ordinary explanations for unusual sounds or equipment readings. No apparition appeared during the latest visit, and the investigators have not released physical evidence proving that anything supernatural occupies the town.
What they reported instead was something harder to measure: an emotional weight.
Recent Violence Draws Attention
The investigation followed two recent homicide cases in the Massapequa area.
In June, Nassau County prosecutors announced a murder indictment against a Massapequa woman accused of fatally stabbing a man inside his family’s home. The defendant pleaded not guilty, and the case remains before the courts. (Nassau County DA)
A separate killing occurred later that month in North Massapequa. Prosecutors charged a local music teacher in the death of his sister-in-law. He has also pleaded not guilty. (New York Post)
These crimes remain human tragedies under criminal investigation. No evidence connects them to paranormal activity, a curse or any unexplained force.
Investigators nevertheless questioned whether years of fear, grief and violence could leave what believers sometimes call an emotional or spiritual imprint.
A Preserve With a Dark Chapter
Massapequa Preserve covers approximately 423 acres and serves as one of Nassau County’s largest protected natural areas. Its trails, ponds and thick vegetation make it a popular destination for walkers and cyclists. (Nassau County)
The preserve also carries a grim history. Authorities recovered human remains there during investigations into killings committed by MS-13 members. Nassau County prosecutors later secured guilty pleas connected to a 2016 murder inside the preserve. (ABC7 New York)
Nearby Amityville adds another layer to the region’s unsettling reputation. The 1974 murder of six members of the DeFeo family inspired the book and film versions of The Amityville Horror, although the supernatural claims surrounding the house remain heavily disputed. (HISTORY)
Atmosphere or Expectation?
Skeptics may point toward suggestion, stress and the natural human tendency to connect a location’s appearance with its history. A dark trail can feel threatening once a visitor learns that violence occurred there.
Believers offer another possibility: places may retain something from powerful human experiences, particularly sudden death, terror and grief.
The Massapequa investigation has not settled that debate. It has merely opened another file.
Something troubled the investigators as they walked through the community. Whether it came from the land, their own instincts or the history beneath their feet remains unknown.
