Something Appeared Beyond Columbia
High above Earth, with Space Shuttle Columbia circling at approximately 218 miles, a camera caught something that did not come with a name.
The photographs were taken during STS-80, a record-setting mission that launched on November 19, 1996, and returned on December 7. Nearly three decades later, three images from the mission were included in a federal release of records concerning unidentified anomalous phenomena.
One frame shows an object near Earth’s curved horizon. Across the series, it appears to rotate or tumble around its major axis.
The camera saw it. The government archived it. What it actually was remains less certain.
An Object Without Scale
The photographs contain no reliable reference point establishing the object’s distance from Columbia. Without that information, investigators cannot confidently determine its size, speed or precise location.
A small piece of material drifting near the shuttle could appear much like a larger object traveling farther away. The available images also show no unmistakable propulsion, controlled maneuvering or extraordinary acceleration.
The object is unidentified—but that word carries an important limitation.
The PURSUE archive explains that records may remain unresolved simply because there is insufficient information to reach a definitive conclusion. Inclusion in the archive does not mean the government believes an image depicts extraterrestrial technology.
“Unidentified” describes the state of the evidence, not the object’s origin.
Ice, Debris—or Something Else?
Former NASA astronaut Thomas Jones, who served as a mission specialist aboard STS-80, has previously examined UFO claims involving video recorded during the flight.
Jones concluded that the objects visible in those videos were ordinary debris particles or ice crystals. Some appeared to change direction after being struck by shuttle thruster exhaust, while shifting sunlight and shadow altered their brightness.
His explanation addressed the STS-80 videos and was not a formal identification of the object in these three photographs. It does, however, offer a plausible answer consistent with routine shuttle operations.
The Question Remains
There is no confirmed evidence that the photographed object performed anything beyond the behavior of free-floating material. There is also no definitive identification attached to the released images.
That leaves the case balanced between an intriguing photograph and a frustrating shortage of usable data.
Nearly thirty years after Columbia returned home, the object remains suspended in three frames above Earth—photographed, archived and still without a name.
Was it merely debris catching the sunlight, or did Columbia’s camera record something more unusual?
You be the judge.
